Turi Foods has 2 hatcheries - located at Bannockburn and at Fiveways (near Cranbourne).
The combined capacity of our hatcheries gives us the capability of producing in excess of 1.5 million day olds per week.
Eggs received from the breeder farms are initially stored in the cool room of the hatcheries until the eggs are required to be placed in the incubators. We aim to store eggs for approximately 4 -7 days.
This ensures we have a stock of eggs to allow for any alterations to market demand on a weekly basis.
It takes 21 days to hatch an egg. At any point in time we have approximately 5.8 million eggs being incubated.
On the 18th day eggs are transfered from setter rooms to hatching rooms.
On the day of hatch, the chicks are taken from the incubators to the take-off room where they are checked for quality, vaccinated, counted and in some cases separated into males and females before being placed in boxes ready to be transported to the broiler farms.
Once hatched, all day olds are transported and placed onto our broiler farms. The day olds are transported to the broiler farms in specially designed temperature controlled trucks.
The quality of our day olds relies heavily on hygiene and cleanliness. We have a stringent quality assurance program in place to ensure our hatcheries are maintained in a clean and hygienic state. This program is overseen by highly qualified technical staff.
